UK(2)

With more than 1000 consumer products containing nanomaterials on the market worldwide there is a more urgent need than ever for an effective framework of governance that ensures public safety and environmental protection whilst at the same time facilitating a responsible development of nanotechnology and promoting innovation.

The FramingNano Project, under the EU's FP7 Programme, has over the past two years developed a proposal for a nanotechnology governance framework that fulfils these needs and which takes into account the opinions of key stakeholders. The framework addresses key needs such as environmental health and safety (EHS) and ethical, legal and social issues (ELSI) as well as the challenges of international cooperation and organisational implementation of key governance measures.

The FramingNano UK Event, to be held in London on 11 February, provides a unique opportunity to explore the key issues of nanotechnology governance and to discuss possible new governance models. The Event will be of interest to all concerned with the responsible development of this vitally important enabling technology.

The FramingNano UK Event is free to attend but requires  online registration >>

Many involved stakeholders share the opinion that the benefits promised by nanotechnologies will fully materialise only if their development takes place responsibly.

With this in mind, businesses, researchers, civil society representatives and regulators involved or interested in nanotechnologies are invited to take part in the final International Conference of the FramingNano FP7 project whose primary objective has been the development of a sustainable governance framework for nanotechnologies.

This event will provide a unique opportunity to discuss the Governance Plan developed, on the basis of key stakeholder input, within the FramingNano Project. The Governance Plan will be subsequently proposed to the European Commission (EC) as a model of management to be followed by European policy makers and stakeholders. Its aim is to ensure that the development of nanosciences and nanotechnologies takes place responsibly, and to the benefit of individuals and society as a whole.

Key elements of the Governance Plan will include recommendations and actions to be implemented at different levels. In particular:

  • Technical and organizational: prioritising actions and research needs in EHS/ELSI areas;
  • Institutional: indicating how to manage and sustain a European policy for NS&T development;
  • Trans-boundary: identifying the tasks to be faced at international level;
  • Communication: suggesting how to involve and inform the public and how to channel stakeholders' opinions and proposals into the European policy on nanotechnology.

The draft FramingNano Governance plan will be presented and described in the light of:

  • The present state and challenges of NS&T governance at both national and international levels;
  • the available governance options and stakeholders' opinions of them;
  • upcoming needs, expectations and responsibilities in EHS risk assessment and management;
  • communication and inclusiveness;
  • societal implications (ELSI).

Internationally renowned experts will introduce these relevant topics with keynote speeches. Break-out sessions will examine the relevant themes in-depth and give participants the opportunity to present their positions in shaping the final Governance Plan that will subsequently be presented to the EC to support actions to address governance and regulation of nanotechnologies.

RiskBridge Final Conference – 26/27 March 2009 Print E-mail
Jan 07, 2009 at 01:22 PM

The Project Partners of the recently completed European Commission FP6 funded Project RiskBridge will host an international, interdisciplinary conference on risk governance and policy learning within and across six important risk fields:

  • stem cells,
  • nanotechnology,
  • radioactive waste,
  • sediments,
  • climate change and
  • electromagnetic fields

The conference, which is scheduled for the 26th and 27th March 2009, will be held at the Scotland House Conference Centre in the heart of the political quarter of Brussels. There is no conference fee for attending the event.

The main purposes of the conference are to disseminate key project findings to academics, scientists and policymakers, and to generate interdisciplinary debate.
Practitioners within the various risk fields, scientists and social scientists interested in general issues around risk governance of complex technologies, and policymakers directly involved in risk management are invited to attend. Individuals working in the commercial sector and relevant NGOs will also find the conference programme directly pertinent to their work in these areas.

Key themes to be explored in the conference, through keynote talks, panel discussions and thematic workshops, include:

1. Risk governance processes in national and international contexts
2. Risk management from academic, commercial and public-sector perspectives
3. State of the art risk governance and major policy challenges for stem cells, nanotechnology, radioactive waste, sediments, climate change and electromagnetic fields.  4. Policy learning across risk fields and implications for international risk management.
5. Transversal issues relevant to risk analysis: The role of systems thinking and adaptive governance
